Vernon Gerald Buckles, longtime Ripley resident, passed away Wednesday evening, November 26, 2014, in the St. Johns Hospital in Tulsa at the age of 78 years.
The son of the late Harry Cecil Buckles and Gertie Myers Buckles, Vernon was born on January 11, 1936 in Ripley, Oklahoma and was raised and educated in Ripley. At the age of 16 he moved to California and worked in the ship yards, retiring from the Long Beach Marina Ship Yard in 2001. He returned to Ripley along with his wife Evelyn at this time and had lived there since.
He enjoyed and supported the Ripley Warriors and attended many of their events. He also enjoyed horse racing, watching basketball and enjoyed setting around playing the guitar.
He is survived by his wife Evelyn of over 42 years of the home; his children, Cheryl Buckles of Cushing, Collette Mauz of California, and George Buckles of Missouri; one step-daughter Brandy Stastny of Colorado Springs, Colorado; one sister Virginia Auston of California; one brother Harry Cecil Buckles, Jr., of Ripley; 13 grandchildren; several great and great-great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends including Teresa Collis. He also loved his dog Foxy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Gerald Lee Buckles and his brothers and sisters, Clifford Buckles, Russell Buckles, Guy Buckles, Cecil Buckles, Orin Buckles, Genevieve Daniel, Elizabeth Soapes and Marline Boyles.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at 2 p.m. in the Memorial Chapel of the Davis Funeral Home.
Burial will follow in the Fairlawn Cemetery.
