(Cushing, Okla.) — Payne County Sheriff’s Lt. Dan Nack urged people to be extremely careful with their mail, which is increasingly being stolen especially in rural areas of Cushing, Yale, Drumright, Creek County and Lincoln County.

“We’re having a horrible time with people stealing mail — they’re looking for checks and then they’re making fraudulent checks,” Nack told KUSH today.

“If they find a check when someone is paying a bill, they’ll take the routing number, the account number, and print new checks with their own name,” Nack said.

He urged people, “If you mail checks or money, drop it off at the post office,” for greater security.

“Don’t leave mail in a box for an extended period.”

An investigation is continuing in this increasingly common crime, especially in rural mailboxes, Nack said.
