(Stillwater, Okla.) — A Stillwater man accused of kicking open the front door of a woman’s house — while she was inside — was released from the Payne County Jail last week on $20,000 bail pending a Dec. 3 preliminary hearing.

Matthew William Mattox, 41, who has a history of substance abuse, could be imprisoned for 21 years to life if convicted of first-degree burglary after multiple prior felony convictions.

Mattox was apprehended on the east side of Boomer Lake about an hour after Stillwater Police Officer Richard Alley was sent to the 300 block of E. 4th Avenue on a burglary in progress at 11:17 am on Oct. 13, his affidavit said.

The victim said, “Mattox showed up at her residence out of the blue,” by kicking in her front door, the affidavit said.

The victim said that once he was inside, “Matthew grabbed her and threw her to the ground. Matthew then left the residence without taking anything,” the affidavit alleged.

“She scratched the tag number onto the rear wing spoiler of her own car,” the affidavit alleged.

The officer wrote in his affidavit “I later ran the tag which checked to a Honda Civic belonging to Matthew Mattox,” who was arrested at 12:20 pm that day.

According to court records and the state Department of Corrections, Mattox was convicted of methamphetamine possession in Payne County in 2018 and placed on two years’ probation that ended in April.

Mattox had been convicted of actual physical control while intoxicated in Tulsa County in 2011 and given an eight-year prison term, but was placed on pre-release two years later.

Mattox had also been convicted of drunk driving in Cleveland County in 2004 and 2010 — he was given probation in the first case and prison in the second one, but placed on pre-release in 2013, DOC records show.
