STILLWATER — An ex-convict with a criminal record in four counties has been ordered held on $50,000 bond pending a Jan. 5 court appearance on charges of possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute in his Stillwater motel room and carrying the drug into the Payne County Jail.
Chase Anthony Detwiler, 39, of Stillwater, could be given two life prison terms plus $101,000 in fines if convicted of his two-count charge filed after eight prior felony convictions.
Detwiler was arrested at 9:34 am on Nov. 21 after a search warrant was served in his motel room on W. 6th Ave. by Payne County Sheriff’s Investigator Brandon Myers with the assistance of the Stillwater Police Department’s Special Projects Unit and sheriff’s deputies, court records show.
“Upon our arrival at the motel, Chase Detwiler was observed exiting his room and walked to the north where he was contacted and detained on the service road adjacent to the motel. When asked if he had anything illegal on his person, he replied that he did not.
“I located a partially smoked marijuana cigarette inside a pack of cigarettes in his possession. I seized a blue Samsung cellular telephone from one of his pockets. I provided Detwiler with a copy of the search warrant and asked if there was anything illegal inside the motel room. He replied that there was only drug paraphernalia,” the investigator alleged in his affidavit.
Inside the microwave on the glass turntable in his motel room were three lines of a crystal-like substance that field-tested as methamphetamine, the affidavit alleged. Detwiler’s birth certificate and other identification were found on top of a dresser, the affidavit alleged.
“Also, on the dresser was a spiral notebook and a separate piece of paper, both containing lists of names with dollar amounts written beside them. Above two of the entries in the notebook were heavily scribbled-out lines that aligned with the names and amounts below.
“In my training and experience, these are consistent with simple drug ledgers used to track amounts owed for fronted drugs. When payment is received, the dealer crosses out, or as in this case, completely obliterates the entry,” the investigator alleged in his affidavit.
Found in a dresser were a broken glass pipe commonly used for smoking methamphetamine, a large plastic trash bag with multiple sections consistent with portions removed to create small bindles; and a red glasses case containing three small plastic bindles, two of which had suspected methamphetamine and one with suspected marijuana, the affidavit alleged.
Additional items of drug paraphernalia were found in the room, the affidavit alleged.
“I discovered several pairs of men’s underwear that had sections of sock material sewn into the interior front, creating a hidden pouch for concealing items.
Jail staff later advised that while Detwiler was changing into jail clothing, they discovered a partially translucent plastic bag secreted in his mouth. The underwear Detwiler was wearing at booking also contained a sewn-in sock pouch identical to those found in the motel room,” the investigator alleged in his affidavit.
The item recovered from Detwiler’s mouth consisted of a larger bindle containing three smaller knotted bindles, all containing suspected methamphetamine, the affidavit alleged. “I also found another piece of paper that was on his person when he was arrested that I seized from his jail property. The paper had two names with dollar amounts next to them. The names had been crossed out showing the debt paid,” the investigator alleged in his affidavit.
According to court records and the state Department of Corrections, Detwiler was convicted of second-degree robbery in Oklahoma County in 2018 and given a 15-year prison term of which he served less than six years before he was released to 10 years of probation in April of 2024.
Detwiler had also been convicted of second-degree forgery in 2011 in Oklahoma County; of shoplifting in 2018 and of second-degree robbery in 2011, both in Canadian County; of two counts of grand larceny in Custer County in 2011; and of unauthorized use of a vehicle and false pretenses, both in 2011 in Cleveland County, DOC records show.
