The year 2010 is almost over.  Over the past year, Rotarians have invited a variety of guests to speak to the club.  Here is a look back on a few of those guests and a brief about what they shared.

1.  Koln Knight:  Superintendent Koln Knight updated the club about the future of Cushing Public Schools.  While the purse strings have been tightened, the future remains bright in Cushing as administration looks at some innovative ideas.

2. Dana Murphy: Oklahoma Corporate Commissioner was a guest right after the Nov. election.  Murphy explained what her office does and warned that belt tightening would continue as tough decisions must be made.

3. Brad Crace:  Crace is the CHS girls basketball coach.  He came at the beginning of the school year and predicted the girls were going to have a great year.  So far, that prediction has been true!

4. Marli Claytor:  Marli is December’s Student Rotarian of the Month.  She is a senior at CHS and quite a horsewoman.  Marli has won numerous awards for her work with cutting horses.  She plans on attending college and majoring in Zoology.

5. Jared Bass:  Jared was also a Student Rotarian of the Month during football season.  He is a senior at CHS and has quite a list of accomplishments both athletically and scholastically.  He is a leader and is known for his great sense of humor.

6. Abby Reid:  Abby received a special junior Rotarian tshirt for her help to the Rotarians.  Abby is the daughter of Rotarian Chris Reid.

7. Harry Escott:  Rotarian Harry Escott – in spite of technical difficulties – tried diligently to inform his fellow members about the insidiousness of meth use and what Rotarians can do to help educate our youth about its effects.

8. Tami Babb:  Rotarian and OB/Gyn Dr.Tami Babb gave a great presentation (including photos) about what she does as a specialist.  It was both fascinating and fun to hear what she had to say.

9. Will Denney: Will is the son of Rep. Dr. Lee Denney and Dr. Frank Denney and has recently returned from studying in China.  While one might expect that to be the program, instead he presented a slide show about his spiritual walk across Spain.  Denney walked over 500 miles, alone, on what is known as the El Camino de Santiago – a journey made by people from all over the world.  He told a bit about people he met, the challenge of walking  up hill and down for a month straight and showed photos of sites along the way.  As for the spiritual aspect of what he experienced or learned about himself, Denney declined to go into any depth.  “It’s just too personal,” he said.

10.  Singing Express:  These talented young people brought Christmas to Rotarians  by performing songs such as “What Child is This?,” “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer”, “Happy Holidays’ and a twist on the classic “Jingle Bells.”  Students of Susan Launderdale, Singing Express put smiles on the faces of Rotarians and guests last Thursday.

Cushing Rotary Club meets at noon on Thursdays at the Steer Inn.
