(Stillwater, Okla.) — A prisoner in the Payne County Jail has been charged with aggravated assault and battery on an inmate from Cushing, who received multiple facial injuries on Feb. 3, court records show.
The defendant, Devin Tereze Thompson, 21, of Stillwater, had been jailed since Sept. 20, 2019, on $20,000 bail on a charge of being a probationer with a firearm, but now is being held on an additional $50,000 bail on his new charge for allegedly punching the inmate in the face.
The victim, Kaleb James Roe, 31, a repeat drug offender, had been jailed on Sept. 21, 2019, on a bench warrant in a November 30, 2017, case accusing him of driving under the influence of an intoxicating substance on a revoked license at Cherry and Seay Streets in Cushing, as well as possessing methamphetamine and a glass smoking pipe.
After an altercation in the Payne County Jail, “Inmate Roe exited the cell with a white shirt covering his head and face,” according to video surveillance, Detention Deputy Thomas Harders wrote in an affidavit.
Roe was examined by a jail nurse, who sent him to the Stillwater Medical Center emergency room for further evaluation, the affidavit said. “Inmate Roe was later referred to a trauma center in Tulsa for further medical attention due to his injuries he received from this altercation,” the affidavit said.
Roe was released from the Payne County Jail on a medical personal recognizance bond, court records show.
If convicted of aggravated assault and battery, Thompson could be given as much as a five-year prison term, according to the felony charge filed last week.
