Harmony Elementary kindergarteners learned a special lesson Thursday when Cushing Police officer Adam Harp and McGruff the Crime Dog came to visit.
Students of Aryn Gaskins and Margie Burris were greeted with handshakes and hugs from their first time guest. In a presentation by Officer Harp, the kindergarteners learned ways to tell “the good guys from the bad guys.”
According to the age-appropriate booklet distributed to the students, one of the ways to determine whether someone is a “bad guy” is this: “Bad guys never act bad while a good guy is nearby watching. Bad guys are bad only when you are alone or with other children.” The children were also encouraged to tell a parent or some other “good guy” if someone does something that makes them feel uncomfortable.
The students watched a video and were able to follow along in the booklet. At the end of the presentation, there was a brief question and answer session. The children were also given booklets about how to use the telephone to call 911 and were encouraged to talk to their parents about what they had learned.
If you would like a copy of the booklet “How to tell the Good Guys from the Bad Guys” please contact your local police department or the National Child Safety Council.
*Special thanks to CHS senior Garrett Moore for assisting McGruff in making his debut.
