STILLWATER — A 29-year-old Cushing man has been jailed on $5,000 bond pending an April 6 court appearance on a charge of possessing a Hyundai Elantra that had been reported by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office as just stolen in Stroud.
If convicted of the felony, Joshua Alexander Williams, who was listed as homeless in court documents, could be given a two-year prison term and a $5,000 fine.
Williams was arrested at 1:58 am on Feb. 25 at Kings Highway and Main Street by Cushing Police Officer Alex Gegen, who had been notified at 1:32 am that a car just stolen in Stroud was headed northbound on Highway 99, an affidavit alleged.
“I arrived at the east side of Cushing city limits and waited to see if the vehicle would come into Cushing jurisdiction. Shortly after, I observed a vehicle matching that description headed westbound on Highway 33 (Main Street).
“The license plate came back to the vehicle that was reported stolen. I followed the vehicle to wait for an additional unit. At about 1:42 am, I performed a traffic stop.
“Officer Snow arrived where I had the driver, identified as Joshua Williams. exit the vehicle. I was informed by Sac and Fox Officer Jasen Hansler, who had arrived on scene and who was requested by Lincoln County to assist, that the vehicle was entered in NCIC at about 1:50 hours.
“Williams advised that he was allowed to drive the vehicle with permission from (the owner). Williams advised that he was headed to Tulsa. I informed him that he was going the wrong direction if he was headed to Tulsa, in which he replied that he must have read the sign wrong.
“He said he was going to see his family, and then he was going to come back. I told him that the vehicle was stolen,” and arrested him, Officer Gegen wrote in his affidavit.
