STILLWATER — A Stillwater woman accused of shooting the foster mother of her two children in the face and stealing the juveniles has been jailed on $500,000 bond pending an April 6 court appearance on a three-count felony charge in Payne County.
The victim, who called 911, was transported to the Stillwater Medical Center before being life flighted to an Oklahoma City hospital where she was listed in stable condition, a police news release said.
The defendant, Megan Renee Kane, 33, has a mental health history, according to a court document regarding her bond. If convicted of assault and battery by means likely to produce death, she could be given a life prison term. If convicted of two counts of child stealing, she could be given 20 years in prison.
Stillwater police had responded at 8:26 pm on March 14 to reports of a shooting in the 300 block of W. 29 Avenue, the news release said.
Kane had entered the foster mother’s residence and shot her in the face, Stillwater Police Detective Kurt Merrill alleged in an affidavit.
“Kane then gathered (the children) and fled the scene with (them), to later be apprehended in Lincoln County, Oklahoma, near the intersection of Highway 102 and 1020 Road,” at 11:04 pm on March 14, the affidavit alleged.
The children were located safely in the vehicle and taken to Oklahoma Highway Patrol headquarters before being released to the Payne County Department of Human Services, the police news release said.
