As the Chapel was nearing completion, the local Thrivent Financial for Lutherans group was torn between providing funds for the Chapel or for the paramedic scholarships. After careful consideration, they decided to write a grant from the Lutheran Thrivent Association for the cost of the pulpit.
Lavern Morris was aware of the need for a chapel at the time of her husband’s death. She speaks of needing a comfortable place that provided reverence and solitude during this sorrowful time.
Anita Rutherford, member of the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, wrote a grant requesting the funds from the Thrivent Organization. In order to qualify for the funds, members of the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer performed in excess of 100 volunteer hours at the Cushing Regional Hospital with the CRH Auxiliary. Volunteers include Lavern Morris, Bettie Roby and Marian Shiever Gilkerson.
With the volunteer hours the Thrivent Organization provided a check for enough funds to purchase the podium for the George R. Smith M.D. Chapel.
