MEDIA RELEASE
(STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA / May 7, 2019) – Yesterday, Stillwater Electric Utility responded to two power outages.
Outage 1
At 1:57 p.m. an A-Tech construction dump truck collided with the aerial communication lines crossing the intersection of Airport Road and Wright Drive. The collision broke two electric utility poles located on either side of Airport street bringing down all three phases of electrical service causing Industrial Substation breaker 66 to open. City crews responded within minutes of the outage and began to assess the damage and make repairs.
Approximately 2,200 customers in the northwest area of town were affected by the outage that lasted for 45 minutes. While the majority of the customers were restored by 2:42 p.m. approximately 34 customers remained without power, including the StillwaterRegional Airport, until shortly after 8 p.m.
Outage 2
At 12:36 a.m. during routine switching at Hospital Substation an electronic control system malfunction (which allows for remote control caused the main circuit breakers to open) de-energizing the substation. City crews responded quickly to assess the situation and to begin restoration. After running several testing scenarios, the source of the failure was determined and restoration began. Local control was established and the substation was brought back online at 2:24 a.m.
The electrical outage, which affected approximately 4,105 customers in the south central area of town, lasted for 1.8 hours.
