(Stillwater, Okla.) — A Cushing man — who is on probation for indecent exposure — has been ordered to appear in court on Aug. 7 on charges of using an ax to threaten a Cushing man and two Cushing police officers, as well as damage a pickup, while he was intoxicated.
If convicted, Keith William Greenwood, 58, who was notified by letter today that a four-count charge had been filed against him, could be incarcerated for 21 years, court records show.
Three years ago, Greenwood was ordered to register as a sex offender for walking around in his backyard while intoxicated — with his pants completely down exposing his genitals in the presence of neighbors and their children, court records show.
At that time, Greenwood was placed on probation for four years and ten months with an order to complete evaluations for mental health and substance abuse, to follow any recommendations, and to complete treatment contained in a background report for the court.
In his latest case, Greenwood was arrested in the 300 block of S. Central Avenue shortly after 6 p.m. on May 9, according to an affidavit by Cushing Police Officer Rachel Hentges.
Cushing Police had been dispatched to the area on a report of a man using an ax to hit a pickup truck — that had two small children inside it, the affidavit said.
“After exiting my patrol vehicle, I looked toward the pickup and observed Keith Greenwood carrying a long yellow handle ax and approaching Master Patrol Officer Matthew PIatt,” Hentges wrote in her affidavit.
“Greenwood initially had the ax down to his side in his right hand. Greenwood raised the ax and began to charge at MPO Piatt,” who retreated and pointed his service pistol at Greenwood, as did Hentges, the affiadvit said.
“Both MPO Piatt and I shouted commands to Greenwood to stop and drop the ax. Greenwood again pursued and approached us in a threatening manner — raising the ax over his head.
“Greenwood was talking, but it was unintelligible. Greenwood appeared unsteady on his feet and the ax wavered in the air as he raised it above his head. MPO Piatt was approximately six feet away from Greenwood at this time,” Hentges alleged in her affidavit.
“Greenwood allowed the ax to fall to the ground, but held onto it. MPO Piatt took the ax from Greenwood and threw it to the ground. MPO Piatt and I struggled with Greenwood as he continued to fight and resist officers,” Hentges alleged in her affidavit.
“Once in my patrol vehicle, I smelled an overwhelming odor commonly associated with alcoholic beverages on Greenwood’s breath and person,” Hentges wrote in her affidavit.
A Cushing man told police that when he saw Greenwood hitting wood on a house in the 300 block of S. Central Avenue and asked how he was doing, Greenwood came after him with the ax, the affidavit alleged.
The man said Greenwood held the ax above his head, chased him, and said “I’ll hit you with it,” the affidavit alleged. The man said “when Greenwood got to his (the victim’s) truck, he stopped on the passenger side and began striking the pickup with the ax,” the affidavit alleged.
The man said that his fiance was in the passenger seat with the window down and his two small children, ages six-months and one-year were in the back seat, the affidavit said.
The man’s pickup had two damaged areas on the hood and the front windshield was cracked, the affidavit said.
The man said that before the police arrived, a neighbor took the ax from Greenwood “so he could not threaten anyone else,” but when the officers arrived, Greenwood took the ax back and approached the officers, the affidavit alleged.
Three witnesses gave similar accounts regarding what happened before Hentges’ arrival, the Cushing officer wrote in her affidavit.
